I did most of the animation six months ago- before I was enlightened to the value of construction or anything of that nature, so please bear with me. The whole thing is pretty random. Sorry about the lack of posting yesterday Critiquers, but I was way too busy celebrating Nutria Day!

What, you guys don't have Nutria Day where you live?

Well, we have it here in New Orleans and it's great! Every year on February 2nd, the nutria come out of their holes, look around, and if they bite you, you spend six weeks in the hospital! It's a grand celebration, really.

We have a lovely drawing up for critique today by Alexandre Marcati of a "whining punk boy"- somebody should sign that kid up for the army!

Hey everybody! Sorry 'bout the lack of post yesterday but I was S I C K and could do nothing but lay in bed and watch cartoons. However, I'm feeling MUCH BETTER so I have decided to have a special Two Post Day to catch up.

My semi-ironic Cab Calloway drawing and Christian's Silly Family

Wow. What a debate has been raging over on John K's blog today! Clearly musical tastes and corporate popular culture make very strange bedfellows. That, or people just like to mouth off and argue- either way!

Ironically, yesterday I did this cartoon drawing of one of my favorite musical artists- Cab Calloway. I was waiting to post it because Tony hasn't gotten very many critiques yet from yesterday's post, but I just can't wait any longer- Cab Calloway just seems too appropriate for a day like today. Please, take a look at Tony's work and critique it still, I don't want the blog to be unfair.

Cab Calloway is fun to draw as a cartoon because he looks like a cartoon in real life. Can you imagine seeing him perform?

Also Christian did a variation on the ol' Donald Duck totum pole playing with the idea of hierarchy in a family structure.

What the hell will tomorrow bring Critiquers? Only time will tell...

Our friend the sphere and the surprise idea!

Hey guys! This is a random in between post with no artwork, so if you are waiting to get artwork posted- don't worry I haven't forgotten you. (Especially you Christine) No, there were just a couple of things I wanted to tell everyone about so I decided to sneak them in. First off, I think we can agree that when learning construction getting the perspective right can be downright tricky. I found this image online the other day and I think it could be helpful- so here it is! (If you have already mastered perspective please ignore this- and for the love of God, please critique the rest of us!)

I thought this might be a good guide to reference when trying to visualize how features wrap around the form you are constructing. Plus it looks like it's from 1997- and so, you know, that's pretty cool in and of itself.

Secondly, the idea!

Well we have all been working very hard on our construction here at Cartoon Critique so I thought I should throw a little fun into the mix. CARTOON CRITIQUE IS HAVING A CONTEST! To be specific, it's a design our new banner logo contest. You have from now until Jan 30th to come up with the coolest logo design you can think of ***USING CONSTRUCTION** for Cartoon Critique. On the 31st I will post up all of the entries I have received and everyone can vote for their favorite one via email. On Feb 1st I will post the winner at the top of the site and there it will sit all month long, reminding everyone of what a badass artist you are. I think this will be a monthly thing from now on, to go along with the theme-o-the month. Sound good? Sweet, then get a drawin' and let's see what ya got!

Hey gang! (Man I use a lot of exclamation points when I type!) Hope everyone had/ is having a nice weekend. I went to these gallery openings and all I could think about when I looked at the figures in the paintings was construction construction CONSTRUCTION! Yay for drilling things into your brain!

Hey everyone! A couple people expressed concern about our new "Theme" way of operating here at CC and I just want to clear a few things up...

-I believe a theme or focus will be a good way to narrow our focus and speed up the learning process. In the multi dimensional world of animation it is easy to get lost in the big picture. If we focus on one thing at a time, we can have a common idea to discuss, share information about, learn. One of the reasons I started this blog is because I felt overwhelmed by the animation industry and I needed people to discuss ideas with.

-That being said, of course we will not be crucified to whatever theme we choose, it is merely our focus, and comments about any aspect of the drawing always be acceptable.

-We will always welcome any person in regardless of their skill level (lord knows I'm no expert myself) That's why we're here, to improve our skills.

-Don't worry it will still be fun

CARTOON CRITIQUE!'S Theme-o-the month...CONSTRUCTION!

Well, a bunch of you have written to me suggesting that we have "homework assignments" here at Cartoon Critique, and I think it's a great idea. I heard suggestions like "draw a certain theme" or "work on a comic together" and I think these are great ideas but we must ask ourselves, "do we really want our work to improve?" or "if went to the trouble of making a comic together, wouldn't we want it to be good?". Well clearly the answer to both of those questions is a resounding YES!, so here is my proposal:

CARTOON CRITIQUE"S theme of the month: CONSTRUCTION! Those of you who read John K's blog today know that if you want to be a badass animator you must first learn construction. So I propose that for the month of January we focus super heavily on CONSTRUCTION here at Cartoon Critique. That means when we critique, we mostly talk about CONSTRUCTION, and when we send stuff in, we expect the CONSTRUCTION to be critiqued by others. Remember, everything you send in doesn't have to be super fancy- send in scribbley pencil drawings, or studies you did from a book, whatever! Chuck Jones said that everyone has 1000 bad drawing in them and the sooner you get them out the better.
So then, after a month of really focusing on getting better at construction, we get to do a fun weird project like "draw your favorite toothbrush" or "draw a very well constructed ox, covered in blood" (get it?) or whatever our little hearts desire. Comment back and tell me your thoughts.

Up next, the cartoons for the day, and my apologies to the people who have to follow an opening like that.

First off congrats to Kelly Toon for being critiqued by John K-

If you haven't seen it you should, because it is a good guide to how we can all critique each other- i.e. what to look for, how to break down other people's cartoons, etc.

Now then, I made an ad for the site and I am going to post it up different places to try to get some new cartoon friends for us to play with and hopefully some more people to critique.

Whew! I am just learning more and more about the nooks and crannies of running a public blog here- hooray for computer literacy! Now lets get down to business.

First off Michael Darbyshire (who is winning the award of most helpful Critiquer right now) sent in a second silhouetted version of one of his Santas so we could all have a little lesson in negative space.

Lets compare...

Kudos to you Michael for assigning yourself homework.

Next, Kelly Toon has sent in some concept drawings she has been working on for a potential client, along with a little background information (but not too much, hehe). We should give her a really good critique so she lands the job and makes a million buxxx! First the text:

"These are concept images that I used to pitch my services as an illustrator to a local author/salesman. This is a very exciting project with a lot of potential. I am under legal confidence not to share text, title, or any detailed material related to the concept. I am welcome to share my art and designs with the web, but the big © Kelly Toon info is necessary to protect myself and my (potential) client. Hopefully it’s not too distracting.

The client was very gratified by these drawings and I am pretty confident that I’ve got the job (I am competing against two other artists). Hopefully so, because so far this has been a blast and being paid to do it will be a pleasure."

"2 Of these drawings show some of my fictional vehicles such as a car inspired by 2 classic jet rivals the F-86 Sabre and the Mig-15 Fagot, the other vehicle drawing is admittedly crude but it is of a space ship."

More info-
"The other 2 drawings are of Larry Hove again imitating me after I had to drink some terrible liquid for the Doctor and another drawing of Nochu freaking out for no reason. Nochu usually just has vertical lines for eyes like in my avatar (as Bill in comments). I apologize if this turns out to be a huge post."

BUT NOT THIS TIME! We have some brand new changes on the ol' critique blog here, and we all owe a big round of applause to Michael Darbyshire for taking the initiative to make them. First off, I'm sure you all noticed our fancy new logo Michael designed, and not only that, but we have a brand new professional-like email address to send your work to. I'm currently developing this character of mine. She's strong and wild and a little crazy and kind of acts like she was raised by wolves. In the comic the line between actual reality and what's made up in her head is extremely blurred. Anyway, here she is- is she qualified to perform an exorcism? Perhaps...

Hi! After following John K's blog for a bit I thought it would be nice if aspiring cartoonists also following it had a place to show their work and have it critiqued be other "students". So, if you're down, email your work to me at elanarpritchard@gmail.com I'll post it, and other cartoonists can critique it in the "comments" section. If people participate, I think it could a really helpful way for people to improve their cartooning skills. To get the ball rolling, I'll post a drawing I have done for critique...
